The new LEGO Space 2024 Sets – A classic series with a twist

LEGO Space 2024

I got my very first classic space set when I was just 8 years old. It was the LEGO Rocket Launcher, and came with 2 of the classic space Minifigures. Yesterday I was super excieed to see some of the new 2024 LEGO Space sets so I picked up 2 of the 7 new releases.

Success! You're on the list.

LEGO is not re-releasing the space sets as their own theme. Instead they have incorporated the sets with the City theme. And more recently you can also find some Space and Friends crossover sets, but that is the topic for another blog post.

When LEGO entered the space age in 1987, the sets instantly became a piece of LEGO history for fans. The little red, white, yellow, and blue minifigures were instantly classics, and we all wish we were either alive when they came out, or collected and saved all the sets if we are older.

Space toys kids can build

Most of these sets are geared towards 2-3rd grade and up, but there is one entry level set under $20. The Spaceship and Asteroid Discovery kit is for ages 4+ and is the perfect transition set between Duplo and regular LEGO.

These NEW sets have a more modern twist on space exploration. First of all the colors are cleaner. The majoirty of the sets are white and black with blue accents. (You will recall that blue and yellow were the classic space colors, and red and black were the major elements in the Futron line.)

Now, we can’t use the pieces to completely recreate Benny’s spaceship from the LEGO movie, but we do get a lot of cool parts that can be used to build creatively, and generate your own universe.

Realistic Space sets with modern features

This new series in the LEGO system have realistic features. There are new printed bricks that resemble battery elements. Special sets have airlocks which interconnect with other sets created in the same theme, allowing related sets to connect to each other. For instance the modular space shuttle and Command rover can connect each other creating a larger set to play with or display!

Kids and adults can create realistic scenes from the night sky or across the galaxy!

Final Thouughts

While these new LEGO Space 2024 sets are not as iconic, or even the re-release of the Galaxy Explorer, they are extremely fun to build and play with. The LEGO Space 2024 sets are designed with ages 6 and up, but adults like me have loads of fun building them and remembering the days of sets gone by.

I’m not 100% sure they should be part of the LEGO City theme. By now, the LEGO group should break these boxes out and start their a new space theme with the classic space logo as a throwback to the classics.
