Often thought of as the regular LEGO brown color - these are actually reddish brown - and I use them most commonly in tree trunks and branches. There are no studs on these pieces, they are most commonly attached using technic axles and pins.

The way I usually use these is on the underside of a roof, and then put a technic rod through the hold to create a slope or angle on the roof.

One of my favorite LEGO pieces for making trees - this reddish brown piece is a one stud rounded plate with a bar on it.  It can be swiveled on a regular LEGO piece, and then the clip is minifigure hand sized so that just about anything can clip on to it.  It allows for all kinds of weird angles which simulates branches on a tree really well
